Bath's older properties were originally fitted with cast iron guttering — a material that, when properly maintained and painted, lasts indefinitely and looks entirely appropriate on a Georgian or Victorian facade. When cast iron fails, the temptation is to replace it with cheap UPVC, but this can look incongruous and may be resisted by conservation area rules. We replace fascias, soffits and bargeboards using cellular PVC or real timber where the existing profile is unusual. Ventilated soffits are fitted where the roof space requires through-ventilation under current Building Regulations. All guttering is installed with correct falls towards downpipes to prevent standing water and moss build-up — a common issue on Bath properties where the original ironwork has sagged on corroded brackets.
